Water coloring tips for beginners

I am no professional water coloring artist and how I like to watercolor this type of coloring sheet is definitely different than what you might do for traditional watercolor.

The art of water coloring is simple and you certainly can create a beautiful piece without much work, but here are a few quick tips to help you master it!

  1. Wet Your Brush: Dip your brush in water before color. This will help minimize the amount of paint you grab for your first strokes. And waste less paint.
  2. Mix Your Colors: Use your palette to mix the desired colors. Start with a light wash and gradually add more pigment for darker shades.
  3. Apply Colors: Apply the wet paint to the illustration in any sections you wish.
  4. Layering: Let each layer dry before adding another to prevent colors from bleeding. Layering creates depth and texture in your painting.
  5. Work from Light to Dark: Start with light colors and gradually add darker ones. This prevents dark colors from overpowering the painting.
  6. Details Last: Add details using smaller brushes as your layers dry. Details should be saved for the end to prevent smudging.
  7. Frame or Preserve: Once your painting is dry, you can frame it or use a fixative spray to protect it.

Try Selective Coloring!

In this technique, a specific part of an image is colored, while the rest remains in black and white or grayscale. This creates a visually striking contrast, drawing attention to the colored area and highlighting its significance within the composition. Selective coloring can be a powerful artistic choice to emphasize a particular subject or convey a specific message in a creative and impactful way.

Have Fun with Different Mediums

While these are perfect for watercolor projects, they can also be used with other art mediums. Here are a few other great options to create art with these Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Water Coloring pages.
